Best Mississippi Blues Festivals

We need some advice on the best blues festivals to attend. We were all set to go to the jukejoint festival in Clarksdale and cancelled due to bad weather. I notice a lot of festivals up in the delta, but don%26#39;t know much about them. We will have to drive 6 hours, so we want to make sure we choose a good event. I noticed several are coming up in May, but they don%26#39;t seem to be as big as the jukejoint. We would also love any advice on neat little B and Bs and places to eat and visit.

When are you planning on going?

We have gone to the Highway 61 Blues Festival in Leland, Ms several times and really enjoyed it. That one is a rather small one day festival which will be June 6 this year. They set up 2 stages. At the smaller stage you will hear alot of ';Delta Blues';. The performers tend to hang around the small stage and visit with each other which is fun to experience. You will see mostly local talent at this festival.I haven%26#39;t looked at their line-up for this year but you are likely to see Eden Brent, Bill Abel and Cadillac John, and Lightnin Malcolm among others. The day after, there is a jam session in Holly Ridge (near Leland). (Charlie Patton%26#39;s grave is in the Holly Ridge cemetary.) The Holiday Inn in Greenville is a nice place to stay.

We have also been to the Sunflower Blues and Gospel Festival in Clarksdale and will be going to that one again this year. This is a 3 day festival which will be Ausust 7,8 and 9 this year. We will be staying in Tunica which is a pleasant 1 hour drive from Clarksdale. (We like to gamble at Harrah%26#39;s properties and can get excellent rates in Tunica so that is why we stay there. Also, Memphis (Bealle Street) is a 1 hour drive from Tunica.)

We have traveled from Texas to ';The Delta'; the last 6 years for our ';Blues Fix'; so I do have some knowledge of the area. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions that I can try to answer for you.

Thanks for the great information and web sites. I was looking at the Leland festival last night. I also like the delta website. I have also considered the little festival on May 9 in Rosedale. That would give us a chance to drive up to Clarksdale and check out some of the sites and juke joints we missed for their festival.

If you are going to Clarksdale (other than at Festival time), you can rent ';apartments'; above the Ground Zero Club. Although not a B%26amp;B, they are pretty cool and are quite reasonable. You can find the info by going to the Ground zero site. I also have a few pictures on the Clarksdale site I think.

Would love to see your pictures. The August blues and gospel festival sounds interesting as well. I wonder how hot the delta is at that time of year.
