Questions about McComb/Brookhaven, MS

We%26#39;ll be visiting family there around Thanksgiving time, and would love any recommendations for dining, drinks, and lodging.

For dining, we%26#39;re excited for the Dinner Bell and Golden Corral, but also wonder if there%26#39;s any charming inns for eating and sleeping? Anything more charming than the Hampton Inn, or the Days Inn??

Also, I know that McComb/Brookhaven are in a dry county. What exactly does that mean with regard to ordering cocktails with meals, or going out for a cocktail in the evening?

Many thanks!!

Questions about McComb/Brookhaven, MS

Hey there.

First of all, I%26#39;m assuming that you%26#39;ll be going between Brookhaven and McComb. In Brookhaven, a few good places to eat would be Broma%26#39;s Deli, The Inez Restaurant, or El Sombrero. Broma%26#39;s is located very close to The Hampton Inn. There is also one in the mall in McComb, but the one in Brookhaven is run better and tastes better. The Inez is a fine dining restaurant in downtown Brookhaven. El Sombrero is just the Mexican place in Brookhaven. It%26#39;s not very clean, but it tastes good, and you can get a real feel of what the people in the town are like there. North of McComb is a fine restaurant called Lake Dixie Springs. You could get directions to it off of the internet. As far as lodging goes, in Brookhaven, don%26#39;t stay anywhere but the Hampton. McComb has several new hotels that would serve their purpose, but as far as quaint inns go, they are few and far between and you would be hard pressed to find any in this area.

Brookhaven is dry. McComb is not. McComb has an Applebee%26#39;s and other bars and such, but a cocktail may be out of the question. Sorry. Hope this helps.

Questions about McComb/Brookhaven, MS

There is also a steakhouse in the same shopping center were Broma%26#39;s is. I believe it%26#39;s called Miller%26#39;s and it is really good. It%26#39;s right by the Hampton Inn.

Lake Dixie Springs is also very good, make sure to call ahead and see if they are open (since it%26#39;s the holiday and all).

If you drive North about 8 miles, you%26#39;ll be in Wesson. There is a restaurant there called Porches that is good. It%26#39;s located in this old house, has lots of character. There are a few new restaurants in Wesson, I%26#39;m not sure of the names. The town is small, and the eating places are right on Hwy 51.

A little farther north, there is Louise%26#39;s BBQ in Crystal Springs, about 30 min north of Brookhaven. Pretty good BBQ.

  • Trip Report from staying at Beau Rivage early August

I will post the trip review in 2 parts - one on the casinos we visited and one on the restaurants. Yum...

DH and I had a 2 free week night offer from the Beau that we took advantage of. We’d not been to the Beau since before Katrina … it was nice to see that some things are being rebuilt but still heart breaking to see all the empty lots – a few with a shattered sign still standing as a reminder of what was there 3 years ago.

Trip Report from staying at Beau Rivage early August

    Casinos report:

We really had a great time – DH plays table games and although we tried a few other casinos first he enjoyed the Beau the best for craps - even though it was a $10 table even on week nights – never saw it go to $5 at any time day or night or at 6am…………..he played $5 table at Hard Rock but found he did better on the table at Beau.

I could not lose at slots at Hard Rock – the most amazing thing for me as I play only pennies and walk around till I find a 9line so I can afford to play max! LOL! I am obviously NOT a gambler – if I lose $20 I am finished. Hard Rock had a promo (maybe it is on all the time, I did not ask) that on the day one signs up for a players card you get credited back to your players card whatever you lose between $25 - $250. Pretty good deal for me! I decided to lose $25 so I’d have $25 to play the next day - -DH told me that was the craziest philosophy he’d ever heard!! 

I COULD NOT lose! It was the craziest thing. I got so bold I went to a penny progressive wheel of fortune (I think that was what it was) bank of machines – some couple had hit ‘the big one’ as they were jumping up and down – found out they’d just won $900…..so I sat down. I figured out to play max I’d have to hit for $4 per spin – omg – that was mega for me and I closed my eyes the first time I did it! I figured after 6 or 7 spins I’d have lost my $25……. No way – I kept winning a bit here and there - -finally hit ‘something’ with bells and a bonus and my spin was worth $123! I snapped a photo of my machine as I did not think anyone would believe me later! My total was up to $193 and I’d put in a $20 bill….. I played it down to $165 can cashed out. I was on a high! 

I found another penny machine that was fun and I won bonus after bonus – DaVinci Diamonds – so I had plenty of money to play even 25 cents a hit now!!

DH hates slots but I begged him to try ‘my’ wheel of fortune’ progressive bank – he was not at ‘my’ winning machine - -put in his money and promptly lost $30 in less than a minute, it seemed! I told him not to fear – I’d win it back for him tomorrow!

The next day I wanted to see other casinos and wanted to try the $3 craps at The Palace so we drove there – DH hated that table and began to lose – I was having fun but I cashed out when he did….I was only $3 down. He played BJ while I tried a few penny slots – won my $3 back plus a little – it’s a small casino and he was not happy so we left to visit Isle of Capri – it is very nice – and larger than Palace. I asked about it being rebuilt and several employees told me it was rebuilt in the original office building – the hotel lobby, restaurants, and casino are on the second floor – a few slots and a bar on the first. Very nice and clean – I would not mind staying there at some point – and we are picky where we stay. I did not have much luck there and got bored - -so I read a book in the lobby while DH played craps. He finally decided to go back to Beau so we left.

That evening we went back to Hard Rock for me to ‘win back’ his $30 – it had to be played that day. He had to actually get a new card as the original was not working for me in any machine – he was frustrated with the entire process and just stuck it in a penny reel machine right by the players club – it worked so I told him I’d just play it there……… did not take long for me to win his $30 plus $10 back! I was so proud to take him the $40 – told him he’d earned $10 interest! That was absolutely the best luck for me – I ended up bringing home $135 profit on my penny winnings – not a bad deal – and I have to say, better than DH!

We love the Beau Rivage – it has a smaller Vegas feel – we go to Vegas every year – sometimes more than once and love it. I am sure we will return if we are offered free rooms at a convenient time. The Beau is beautiful and the rooms are very nice. I was disappointed to see they do charge for internet service there though – I am not used to being charged. It was $11.99 for 24 hour use.

Trip Report from staying at Beau Rivage early August

    Restaurant reports:

I had read about various restaurants on Trip Advisor (thank you members!) and wanted to try a few outside of the casinos. We used to attend a convention in Biloxi every year in the mid 80s and loved Mary Mahoney’s – that was a ‘fer sure’ one for us to try.

On the way into town we tried to find “The Shed” in Ocean Springs – we took the exit before Ocean Springs and drove down – we actually passed “Aunt Jenny%26#39;s” which was also on my list……..got down to the beach road and could not find The Shed – so I called them for directions – oops, we’d not gone far enough on I-10 and needed to have taken exit 57 and gone NORTH of I-10…..so we drove a bit farther east and up to I-10 – went across – did not see a sign – but did see a drive on the left about ¼ mile up …………when we drove in it appeared to be a trailer park and a junk yard……. I said this had to be it – but we just could not find it anywhere! We parked and got out – saw nothing but old picnic tables and school desks outside an old shack…. DH was ready to get back in the car to leave – he was tired from the drive and hungry…… but I insisted to walk around the shack and check it out – just an instinct…..there was ‘no life’ around but about 6 other cars parked in the area on the dirt …… omg – the shack was the restaurant, The Shed!!!! Now, in all my reading NO one has written a description of the physical appearance of this place – at least not one that I could find! LOL! I tentatively cracked open the door as we could not hear a sound – and lo and behold music was blaring away inside and lots of folks sitting around eating the most delicious smelling BBQ! We went inside amazed – it was hilarious – not only is the food worth the trip but the ‘atmosphere’ is something everyone should experience! I went back outside while we waited on our food and snapped photos – and saw another parking lot on the other side of the one where we parked -- so that is where most folks were parked. Restrooms are outside in the back – not exactly an out-house –but nevertheless you have to go outside - -very modern, clean, nice restrooms – old stools are stacked along the wooden porch to get to the restrooms – it’s just too cute!!! We had the ribs – delicious – although they came soaked in BBQ sauce – we prefer dry ribs and if we ever do return will order them without the sauce. Since it was Sunday, a lot of locals began coming in dressed in their church finery and others came in to pick up orders that had been called in – it is obviously a very popular place!! Just goes to show you cannot judge a book by its cover! Cost – our rib plates and sides %26amp; drinks were about $25 total.

We had lunch at Mary Mahoney’s – as delicious as ever – I think the final total was about $50 for 2 for lunch – it included salad and their bread pudding – DH had ordered gumbo for appetizer – he had soft shell crab and it was cooked perfectly and I had the stuffed red snapper (stuffed with crawfish and shrimp) and it was perfect ; not too rich – just delicious. Their nice hot soft bread was wonderful too. We enjoyed walking around and seeing the before and after Katrina photos and where the water line had risen to. (above the mantle on the fireplace in the room where we were eating).

We never made it back to Aunt Jenny’s – will have to try it on the next visit.

We had several comped meals at the buffet in Beau Rivage – ate lunch there one day and a breakfast there one morning. It had a good variety and everything was very tasty – very clean and a pretty display. It’s not nearly has high quality as the nicer buffets in Vegas but for a comped meal it was just fine.

We ate at a Waffle House on the morning we left town – there is only one on every other block in the Biloxi area!  Gas was ‘only’ $3.55 so we filled up – it was about 20 cents per gallon cheaper than gas at home.

We had lots of fun – it was a fun 2 ½ days – we will certainly return and recommend folks to go – glad to see they are finally coming back after Katrina.

Thanks for a great TR. Good to know about the looks of The Shed. Without the heads up I know my hubby would have turned around faster than my automatic window going down to check out the scene....he%26#39;s not very adventurous!

Love DaVinci Diamonds...I think I%26#39;m addicted to those cascading reels machines.

animlluvr -- LOL! I just about did not get my hubby to venture farther -- and it would have been OUR loss - hope you will get a chance to try The Shed.

I will be looking for those DaVinci Diamonds in Vegas the next time we head out.

I forgot to mention we did eat a comped buffet lunch at Hard Rock and thought it was only worth a %26#39;freebie%26#39; - we were very disappointed in the lack of variety and the quality.

We are not much on buffets anyway -- but DH did not know what else to ask for after he played and we were ready to eat.

OOOOH Vegas probably has all kinds of fun cascading reels penny slots....we%26#39;re trying to get out there by the end of the year...but plane tickets are killer. We%26#39;d have to do better than $143 to make up for that trip :)

I am laughing about your experience at The Shed.

There is a reason it%26#39;s called, uh, The Shed!! Because that%26#39;s what it is! :) But it%26#39;s dang good BBQ, isn%26#39;t it? Well worth the trip.

And you are right -- the ';atmosphere'; (or lack thereof) is part of the whole experience. It looks like an old tin shack that%26#39;s been abandoned.

Yes, Magnolia, it IS appropriately named -- I just wish we%26#39;d been a bit forewarned so we could have been prepared! :)

It should be in all the guide books as a MUST stop ....delicious food and fun atmosphere -- very unique decor -- :)

I agree, The Shed is a ';must stop'; place. I never visit the MS coast without stopping by there at least once. (My nephew used to work there years ago.) Gotta Get Fed at the Shed.

Be sure to write a review, and let people know that The Shed is, indeed a shed. :)

    dog boarding

    Hi Carol:

    Go to this link: http://www.tunicapetresort.com/

They had excellent reviews when they were called Happy Tails!

I will be leaving my Chihuahua with them in May. Also they are located on Casino Center Drive -- just down the street from where we will stay.

    Have a great trip.

    dog boarding

Did you board your pet here? Were you satisfied?

Yes. He was very well taken care of. I now have 2 chis and have made a reservation with the Pet Resort for next month.

If you try them, please let me know what you think. I%26#39;m certain you will be happy. Also, at the end of your stay at a casino hotel, check with a host/hostess to see if they will comp your fees to the Pet Resort! Some of the casinos do!

I boarded my 60 pound hound there last December. This is the best boarding facility I have ever used. They were very good about making sure she got plenty of exercise and the runs were very clean.

    Horseshoe Trip Report

My wife and I just got back home today from a 3 day trip to the Horseshoe. My host from the Horseshoe in Indiana had arranged a suite for us for 3 nights. The comps have loosened considerably since my last trip. I had only played for about 30 minutes when my wife said she was hungry. The floor person heard her and asked where we wanted to eat and we said Binions. He came over about 2 minutes later with a $300 comp. If you are going to Horseshoe you should try the steak house because it is excellent! Our suite was huge with multiple flat screens, a sectional sofa, and a jacuzzi tub. And to top off a great trip I won enough at the single deck black jack tables to pay off my student loans!! My only complaint is that it took about 20 minutes for the dealer to color us up because I requested gray chips and they have to order them. Then when I got to the cage the first thing they asked is if I would like security to escort me to the room. Ofcourse I said I did. LOL The next day was not as though. We decided to go to Samstown becauses there is a particular dealer there that I play with. When we arrived I went to the high limit room and my wife sat down beside me. I bought in and placed my bet and dealer asked if my wife was playing. She said no and he said hunny if you ain%26#39;t playin you aint sittin down at a $100 table. Needless to say we Samstown and I will not be returning!

What will be your route through MS? I-10 or will you enter the state further north?

Sorry, missed your last post. Obviously, looks like you will be driving I-10. With that being the case, you won%26#39;t spend long in MS, as that is really a short span of Highway...and so many landmarks on the Coast are gone after Katrina.

It is a short distance off I-10 to visit Waveland %26amp; Bay St. Louis, the heart of the destruction (and I do not mean that in a voyeuristic fashion, but what Katrina wrought, and what the locals can relate to you when having a meal in a local diner down there, is something to appreciate - a true force of nature).

All: Arriving Sunday 10/19 for our first-time visit to Biloxi. Comped at the Grand for 3 nights; car through Thrifty ( not thrilled with the price, but hey that%26#39;s what the market will bear); signed up for Boomtown player%26#39;s club online. Looking for a reasonable non-casino restaurant, reasonable liquor store/convenience type store , and any suggestions for any not-to-be-missed destinations once we get there.

Have already eaten at the Bellagio Olive in Las Vegas, Isle of Capri and Hard Rock are here in Florida, just looking for something that perhaps I shouldn%26#39;t miss.

Basically penny slot players looking to get away without sitting on a plane or in an airprt for 8 hours each way, so we picked Biloxi, as it is only a 2 hour flight each way. We%26#39;ve already been warned that Biloxi is not Las Vegas, so expectations for awe inspiring are not high; just want to have a good time. All suggestions are welcome :-) Mark

Biloxi novices arrive 10/19; any suggestions?

I%26#39;m bumping up a post from an August Trip Report which gives you some suggestions for those local restaurants. :)

Biloxi novices arrive 10/19; any suggestions?

If you don%26#39;t mind driving just a few miles to the West on the Beach Blvd., you will drive into Biloxi%26#39;s sister city of Gulfport. There is a lovely casino there also on Beach Blvd. called Island View Casino Resort. It%26#39;s a big beautiful new casino/resort that was rebuilt from an old Grand Casino that was destroyed during Katrina. It has alot of entertainment (concerts, etc.). You could check it out along with the casino/resorts in Biloxi.

Also, up Hwy. 49 in Gulfport on past I-10 intersection, a couple miles further is a delicious restaurant called Look Out 49. It%26#39;s in an unassuming white building with royal blue trim on the left next to a big box store of some sort. The food is out of this world.

Have you eaten at Mary Mahoney%26#39;s yet? It%26#39;s kind of accross the street from Bellagio to the East a little back behind an open lot area. You can see it from Beach Blvd. We have eaten there and thought it was pretty good; but thought the little room they put us in was noisy...sound bouncing off the walls like crazy...especially with a happy tipsy lady with the VERY loud voice sitting at a table in the corner near us...lol.

There are several liquor stores sprinkled here and there....especially, in the small store front strips....just keep an eye out.

Good luck on your trip to Biloxi/Gulfport casinos. It%26#39;s a quaint relaxing slow beach town that%26#39;s beginning to recoup from Katrina thanks to the casino business now going pretty strong. Sounds like you have been there already; so, I don%26#39;t have to tell you that. Just hope Gustav didn%26#39;t eat away again at Beach Blvd. since they have been working SO hard the past few months at getting it in good shape and attractive.

Animluver and SuthernBell: Thanks for your suggestions. Not huge foodies, just want to be able to get out of the casinos to eat once in a while.

    Oaklandpark,

I believe I got the same offer from Harrah%26#39;s as you. Is your airfare included? Seems almost too good to be true doesn%26#39;t it?

Let me know how it goes as I am going early November.

vegasgrandpa: No, the airfare wasn%26#39;t included :-(. We had gotten offers that included the airfare right after we got back from Vegas in April, but at the time that we got those offers, we weren%26#39;t in the market to go to Biloxi.

As the summer wore on and we didn%26#39;t snap up any airfare-included offers, the offers stopped coming. I figured it was because the jet-fuel was so high and we were only penny players from Ballys/Flamingo/Rio.

We got some web-special seats on AirTran for $250 r/t but that didn%26#39;t include seat assignments lol. $6.00x4 later our seats were purchased, then the car rental prices were twice as high as Vegas. We go this Sunday, so I will post a report when we return.

Oakland can I ask why you are renting a car? Most of Biloxi I found to be walkable. One night we took a cab to dinner. No, Bilxoi for sure not Vegas but was fun and the first time I ever ate flounder %26amp; marinated crab it was GREAT.

    LIG

SIWS, it would be a far trek if you walked to the Imperial Palace, Palace, and Boomtown from Beau Rivage and Hard Rock. True, you can walk between the Beau, Hard Rock, and maybe Isle of Capri. Also, the Grand is a bit of a smaller trek from the Beau. I think it%26#39;s spread out enough among some casinos to need a ride. There is the casino shuttle, though.

    Natchez Trace Parkway in October

Hi, we are planning a motorcycle trip for a long weekend on the Natchez Trace Parkway in Oct. Right now, we%26#39;re planning on getting on on it at Natchez and off at Tupelo. We%26#39;ll take 2 days for that trip. Any advice on places we should stop and explore? Any recommendations on the best place for lodging around mid-way? Any restaurants we shouldn%26#39;t miss? We appreciate any advice.

    Natchez Trace Parkway in October

Am I late to this post?

If not, what are your interests?

    Natchez Trace Parkway in October

Not too late, but we%26#39;re leaving soon! We have hotel reservations, so that%26#39;s taken care of, but if there are any places of interest we should stop while on the Parkway, I%26#39;d appreciate the advice. We will have time to do a little sightseeing. We like exploring the history of an area, seeing quirky tourist attractions as well as high quality museums, and also the natural beauty and scenic attractions of an area. We don%26#39;t really care much about the night life, casinos, or shopping, although we might be convinced to stop for shopping with artists / crafters of an area. Oh, and one last thing - we ALWAYS stop for good ice icream! Thanks for your help!

My boyfriend and I are driving from Memphis to New Orleans on November 3rd. Where%26#39;s worth a visit on the way. We can take 2 nights out if need be. I looked at Clarksdale and Tunica (but that sounds a bit fishy to me ha ha. I guess we%26#39;re looking for somewhere that catches the essence of the state? PS Other legs of the road trip are ATlanta to Memphis and New Orleans to Houston which I%26#39;ll post on the relevant forums but feel free to chip in if you have any thoughts.

En-Route From Memphis to New Orleans

    Take a look through

    www.visitthedelta.com

Great info and highlights about all the towns along that route.

IMO, Clarksdale, Vicksburg, and Natchez would be stops that capture the ';essence of the state';.

Tunica has some nice hotels at the casinos, but that%26#39;s all Tunica is. You will not ';see Mississippi'; by visiting a casino at Tunica.

You can post additional questions on the forums for these cities, but for lodging, a couple personal suggestions I%26#39;d make, are:

    Clarksdale:

    www.shackupinn.com

    Vicksburg:

    www.cedargrove.com

Natchez: LOTS of the Antebellum tour homes are inns.

Look at the Natchez lodging section of TA.

You also might want to leave time to do some of the drive along the Natchez Trace (www.nps.gov/natcheztrace).

Nov. 3, (in MS) is right about when the leaves are their prettiest in terms of Fall color.

Hopefully that can get you started.

    Have fun,

You will probably mainly be taking I-55-S from Memphis directly to N.O., right?

Vicksburg might be out of your way a little; but it is approximately an hour drive to the West on I-20 which takes off of I-55 in Jackson, MS, my home area. It has a Civil War Memorial Battlefield, a few casinos along the river, and interesting architecture in the various homes and such.

The Natchez Trace which starts up around Nashville, TN, and goes all the way to south Mississippi around Natchez, MS....lots of woodsy scenery, a few lookouts....interesting leisurely tour of the Tennessee/Miss./Alabama countryside. Here%26#39;s a good site to check it out:

    www.nps.gov/natr/planyourvisit/index.htm

It doesn%26#39;t take you directly to New Orleans, though. You wind up more northwest in Natchez closer to the western Miss. and Louisiana border. However, you can get to New Orleans from there easy enough.....just find you a map for that area.

There is ALOT of interesting cajun/creole countryside in and around New Orleans and Baton Rouge. You will find alot of interesting things in that area.

    Travel to Biloxi Oct 22-24

My husband and I are traveling to Biloxi next week. He will be interviews all day I am looking for things to explore. First time in the area, and may be moving there if all goes well.

Any ideas what to do while he is busy, I am not much of a gambler, but I do love to play tourist.

    Travel to Biloxi Oct 22-24

Really not too much to see in Biloxi since Katrina wiped it out. However, crossover big bridge into Ocean Springs along Hwy 90 (10 min). Go into quaint shopping area (right at first light, next to Hancock Bank). Small shops and food along tree llned streets. Hidden treasure.

Whole Gulf Coast area along water from Biloxi to New Orleans is still devastated and rebuilding. Very little remaining from previous time. Everything cleaned but not rebuilt yet. It will take a generation.

Thanks I will do look into that. If all goes well we will be looking to move to the area. It will be a new experienc for both of us. We currently live in the mountains of Colorado. Not much here except snow during the winter.

    Thanks again

    Great Mississippi River Balloon Race

We attended this event this year and were disappointed to see such limited space for the balloons. I hope the organizers are seeking a larger spot for future events like this! The balloon glow was beatiful, but why only Friday night?

  • Hotels Near Corinth

I have a meeting in Guys, TN, and it looks like Corith is the closest place to stay. The hotel reviews on Tripadvisor look pretty grim. I%26#39;m willing to drive a bit. Where%26#39;s the closest area that I can find somewhere decent to stay? Is it wishful thinking to hope that there are any spas, resorts, B%26amp;Bs nearby? Thanks!

    Safe??

Okay guys; I keep seeing the word ';safe'; referenced on your forum. What parts of the city are ';unsafe';? We are staying at Hampton Inn at 465 Briarwood Drive, supposedly close to soccer park. Should I be concerned? Geezzz....I feel like I%26#39;m going to Memphis!

    Safe??

I don%26#39;t like that area, there have been some problems with car break ins, and some car jackings but not at that particular hotel.

    Safe??

Oh well; not much I can do about it at this point; as our entire soccer team is booked at this Hampton; reservations have to be finalized way in advance. We typically stay at Hampton%26#39;s or Hilton%26#39;s; something to do with travel points for coach I think. Thanks for your response.

    Things To Do...Restaurants

Hello all; We will be arriving in Jackson this upcoming Friday evening October 24, staying two nights, for a soccer tournament. Our first game is at the godforsaken time of 7:30a.m. (means be on field by 7:00a.m., means wake up at 5:30a.m. on a Saturday, no less), the second game isn%26#39;t until 4:30p.m. So, we will have a window of time there in which we could do other things; just not that familiar with Jackson. Also, recommendations for good restaurants would be appreciated; even sports bar types (gotta see that Arkansas Ole%26#39; Miss game). We are staying at Hampton Inn North at 465 Briarwood Drive if that helps. Any information and/or recommendations would be appreciates.

    Things To Do...Restaurants

Assuming you don%26#39;t want to venture too far away from the fields...

A couple exite (I-55) North is County Line Road with shopping convenience. There is a nice mall with all the typical stuff and your usual chain restaurants, Old Navy, Target. Academy, etc. in the outparcels.

Plenty to choose from in the area.

If you want a list of stores, go to

    www.visitridgeland.com, and click on shopping.

OR, go a couple exits South, to Lakeland. Here you can visit the Museum of Natural History, the MS Agriculture %26amp; Forestry Museum, and LeFleur%26#39;s Bluff State Park.

At least that can get you started.

Have fun, and good luck in your tournament.

Thanks very much for the information; very helpful and useful!!

There is a Buffalo WIld Wings in Ridgeland, can%26#39;t get a better sports bar.

Thanks; you are right; have been to Buffalo Wild Wings in different states.

  • Sams or Harrahs - Help

We have never been to Tunica. Where should be stay. I think it has come down to those two places. ANY and ALL inpurt will be appreciated. From reading quite a few threads, there seems to be no clear cut favorite. If you stayed in either of these places, love to hear from you.

    Sams or Harrahs - Help

We%26#39;ve stayed both places, but Harrah%26#39;s has the Terrace and Veranda (it used to be the Grand) so just know you have to drive to the casino or take the shuttle over there. They also have a hotel next to the casino, but we stayed at the Terrace so can%26#39;t tell you about it. Our room was excellent and had good luck at their casino.

We%26#39;ve also stayed at Sam%26#39;s and had a nice room there too...if you eat at their BBQ restaurant, keep in mind the portions are HUGE!!! I wish we would have known since we would have shared. It was good but WAY too much food!

    Sams or Harrahs - Help

Just got back at the end of September from a Friday and Saturday night stay at Harrah%26#39;s Veranda. Room was great. We had a vehicle but chose to deal with the shuttle instead. Ran regularly every 5 or 10 minutes until the wee hours (Saturday night, we were out until 4:00 a.m.). Have never stayed at Sam%26#39;s (but have gambled there) but have heard that the Corky%26#39;s barbeque on it is great. Good luck and post a trip report when you get back!

God, just realized that, once again, my thoughts got ahead of my fingers!! Have heard that the buffet at Sam%26#39;s is good, that would be where the Corky%26#39;s is at, lol. Have a great time!

We stayed at Harrah%26#39;s Veranda twice this summer and loved it. I posted a review and have pictures posted. We have never stayed at Sams so, I cannot help you there.

Have stayed both places, and much prefer Harrah%26#39;s. Sam%26#39;s rooms are okay, but the casino is too crowded, noisy and smoky. Corky%26#39;s is good for BBQ.

    Sheraton

We%26#39;ve gotten a good offer from Harrah%26#39;s, two nights comped at either Harrah%26#39;s (Grand) or Sheraton. Horseshoe would only comp one night and $100 free slot play. Has anyone ever stayed here before and, if so, any thoughts, comments, etc.?

This site is my Bible -- appreciate all the posts!!

    Sheraton

We stayed at Harrah%26#39;s but not Sheraton...our friends have stayed at both. The downside of Harrah%26#39;s is unless you are placed in the hotel by the casino, you will need to either drive over to the casino or take the shuttle. At least with the Sheraton, the hotel is right there by the casino (which is next to the Horseshoe and Gold Strike, but you probably already know that)

    Sheraton

Thanks, Ducky -- think we are going to try the Sheraton. Have enough points on card for meals, just a two and a half hour drive, what the heck! It%26#39;ll keep the card active for when we go to Vegas in May of 09. Appreciate the input!

There used to be quarter machines back by the cashier that were very good to us, but I couldn%26#39;t find them when we were there a couple months ago.

There were for different areas (like there was one with a crab on the front that was for Louisiana and another for New York, etc). I can%26#39;t remember the name of them, but they were 3 reels and think 3 quarters per pull. Anyway if you see them anywhere in Sheraton, try a couple bucks in them since they used to pay out pretty good for us :)

Ducky -- will walk through the place and if we see them, will put in a $20 for you, maybe you%26#39;ll bring us luck, lol. Just killing time until we go to Vegas!!

Really like Sheraton and Horseshoe. Also, the new Harrah%26#39;s Grand does have one of the hotels that is attached to the casino, the other two you need a car or the shuttles run continuously. I believe all the Sheraton rooms have hotubs, nice. Have fun!!

nina, thanks, have stayed at Harrah%26#39;s before, wanted to try something different, so we%26#39;re staying at the Sheraton. Hope out of all that post here, someone has really good luck!!

  • Advice for First Timer

Having been brought up on a diet of American Blues music and Bob Dylan (that gives away our ages!) we (husband and me) are planning to come see Highway 61 for ourselves and looking for as much advice as possible. We want to explore by car for about 2 weeks Mississippi and possibly Tenessee. We want good music, beautiful countryside - rivers, lakes and mountains, bit of history and friendly locals. I want to sit on a rocking chair in a front porch like they do in the movies! Would rather avoid big cities and like the idea of staying in B%26amp;Bs. We would like to stay in one place for at least 3 days at a time and don%26#39;t want to drive more than about half a dsy each transfer. Oh, and I would like a horse to ride occaisionally. Where do we start? Where do we go? We could fly to Atlanta but that seems miles away from where we want to go. Please tell me my romantic notion of the south is not wrong! Can%26#39;t wait for all your ideas!

    Advice for First Timer

    Dobbin,

I may have said some of this over on your post about Memphis, but for info on this area you asking,

    look at

    www.visitthedelta.com

It is a really good site that gives details about each town along US 61 (from Memphis southward to NOLA) and features of each.

Once you know more about which places you want to visit, you could then decide %26amp; price your airport.

Yes, ATL IS very far....8 hrs from the MS Delta, about 7.5 from Memphis. The closest airports to this area are Memphis and Jackson, MS, but Jackson (JAN) will not be an international flight. If you wnat to visit the TN mountains, you could also try pricing the airport in Nashville (BNA). About a 3 hr drive from Memphis, 4.5 from the Delta area, and about 3 hrs from the TN Mountains.

    have a good trip.

    Miller

    Advice for First Timer

Miller, thanks for your advice. I think we have made some decisions - at last! We plan to fly to Memphis and head down Highway 61 towards Clarksdale and then go south about as far as Natchez before heading back north on Natchez Trace Parkway turning for Memphis after Tupelo. Does that make sense for a two week tour? Don%26#39;t really know where we will stay on way but like the idea of B%26amp;Bs. Can we find them on the way or should we book for May? I have found lots on the Mississippi Travel Guide website

I am still nervous about driving directly from Memphis Airport. Is it crazy with 10 lanes? Please bear in mind that our roads in Scotland tend to be one side of the raod going one way and the other going the other way! I find it quite alarming on the 2 lane motorway to Edinburgh! Help?

    Starkville/Columbus

We will be going to the UK/Miss. State football game in Starkville this weekend. It%26#39;s been years since I%26#39;ve been to the area. Any suggestions for restaurants/bars, etc. We are a crew of late 40 somethings. Is the ';Cotton District'; in Starkville anything to get excited about?

    Slot question

What%26#39;s the best slot machine for...fun bonus rounds? Where? I%26#39;ll be at the Beau for my first trip to Biloxi, but it probably won%26#39;t be my last.

So tell me which ones you like for the bonus, please.

    Slot question

    I have a few favorites...

    Lucky Meerkats

    Wizard of Oz

Super Jackpot Party...although very frustrating at times

Crazy Gems Tiles or something like that...it%26#39;s a cascading reels machine...great bonus

    Tabasco

    Lobster Mania

    Monopoly

    Men in Black

There are others but can%26#39;t think of them all

    Slot question

Byrd: Just got back from Biloxi . Was only at the Beau for an hour or so, but overall had a great time playing penny slots for the better part of 68 hours. LOL

Enjoyable bonuses a) Monopoly Big Money Train

    B) Road Trip

    c) Moolah

    d) Where%26#39;s the Gold

    e) The Great Wall

    just back - trip report

Wow. Wife and I drove to Tunica for our first trip there on Friday morning and just returned (Sun. late afternoon). It was a whirlwind tour but we managed to do all of the casinos for a few hours each. We stayed at a non-gaming hotel because it was half the price on weekends. We weren%26#39;t sure what to expect from the Best Western Tunica Resorts property, but we were very pleasantly surprised. Our room was clean, the free morning breakfast was adequate to get our morning started and the people working there could not have been friendlier. Overall it was a place we would recommend and stay at again.

Started off Friday early afternoon at Bally%26#39;s. It was OK but one of our least favorite. The place was not very active at all. Granted, it was a Friday at one in the afternoon, but they really needed some bodies in there playing. And the whole Barn/Farm motif was kind of goofy. Also, the drinks were really bad = powdered, cheapy margarita mix and scotch that could have choked a mule. Good news is that wife won a good bit playing five dollar black jack. Down side is that it paid 6/5, but she had fun and came out ahead.

From Bally%26#39;s we drove less than a mile to a casino cluster incuding the Sheraton, the Horseshoe and the Gold Strike. Sheraton was OK, but underwhelming- sort of your plain label variety casino. Made a few bucks there and headed to the Horseshoe right next door. This place was hoppin%26#39; and turned out to be our favorite. Actually looked like it could have been a Vegas property. It was packed and everyone was sort of rowdy and having fun. Casino decor reminded me sort of Golden Nugget in DT Vegas - not modern, but classy. The two best things about this place were that wife won big here at BJ, playing the ten dollar shoe game with the three card poker side bet, which paid 9/1. She got it several times, though she only played the side bet ($5) every third or fourth hand, as it is commonly known as a ';sucker bet';. The other great thing was how accommodating they were here. After only an hour or so at the tables our first trip there, they comped us two Friday night seafood buffets. The buffet is normally 25 a person and was fantastic. Very classy for a buffet and the variety and food prep were excellent. Loved the Horseshoe so much, went back Sat. night for four hours and won some more. Excellent drink service and good stuff.

From HS, we wandered next door to the Gold Strike, an MGM property. The hotel part looked very classy. The casino was large and busy, but with the low ceiling and no flash, it was just OK. Won a little here, but didn%26#39;t stay more than an hour or two. The shops and restaurants in the Gold Strike looked a lot nicer than at other casino properties, but since we didn%26#39;t stay there, we spent very little time in them.

Finally, to wind up the first day, we headed over to the brand new, stand-alone Harrah%26#39;s property. It was all by itself away from the other casinos but not terribly far away. You could see the lights from afar, as this is the largest and glitziest of all the Tunica properties. It was spectacular inside and out. Inside it was ultra mod, sort of like a combination of the Palms and Planet Hollywood. Big fancy (expensive) bar in te center of the main casino floor and colored lighted artsy columns throughout the casino. Very flashy. Bad news was most table games were fifteen and up. Found one ten dollar table and made a few bucks before finally retiring back to the Best Western. Whew, what a day. My gal played at five casinos and won a bit at all of them.

Sat. morning, we decided to go to the other cluster of casinos which were about four miles straight down the street from our hotel. This cluster has Hollywood casino and Resorts Casino (the old Harrah%26#39;s) on one side of the street and Sam%26#39;s Town Casino complex on the other side. We started by using the two for one ACG (American Casino Guide) coupon for the Hollywood%26#39;s Epic buffet. We used it for lunch and it saved us nine bucks. The buffet was not a large one and we were a bit skeptical, but for nine bucks for two, we tried it. It was not fancy, but all of the food was well prepared and we were more than happy with it. Then went into the Casino proper at Hollywood. It is very cool, if you like Elvis and movie memorabalia. They actually had the original Bat Mobile from Batman, a car in Elvis%26#39; movie Spinout and the scale model of the Titanic used in the movie right on the casino floor, along with other things like some of Tom Hank%26#39;s props from Forrest Gump and George C. Scott%26#39;s uniform from Patton. We loved this part of the casino. HOWEVER, two downers at Hollywood. First, Casino is very smoky. They really had poor ventilation. Second, this was the first of six casinos where my wife lost. Boo.

Wandered next door to Resorts. Felt sorry for these folks, as the place is super plain Jane and it was nearly empty on a Saturday afternoon. Also, wife%26#39;s losing streak continued here, so we got out of there pretty fast. Drove across the street to Sam%26#39;s Town, which was really hoppin%26#39;. Lots of casino play on this large floor and we loved that this was the only property that had five dollar, six deck, HAND SHUFFLED, shoe games. Spent about three hours here and did nicely.

Went home early evening just to relax for an hour before heading out Sat. night to the Horseshoe, where we closed out our trip to Tunica. Stayed there four or five hours. Band was fun, black jack was great, wife made a killing on twenty bucks and all was good. God, I love this place.

Final notes = our first trip to Tunica was fun and profitable, BUT, if you have never been, realize two things about Tunica. It is in the boonies. I mean, right next door to all of the Casinos are large cottonfields and farm land. There is NOTHING to do in this town, except gamble. All restaurants, bar a few chain fast food joints are casino restaurants. Also, know that you really do need a car, as the properties can be anywhere from next door to each other or as much as five miles away. Will we go back??? Maybe, as a cheap substitute for a Vegas fix, but never for more than two days at a time. Tunica is what it is= farmland with casinos. We have no regrets and we now know what to expect if we go again.

    just back - trip report

Thanks for the Tr will keep that in mind I am going 1st time in 2 weeks. I have heard good and bad. Sound like your wife did OK how about you? I have never heard about Resorts I guess that%26#39;s why.

Thanks for posting! I%26#39;m planning our first roadtrip for a week in November. So it%26#39;s fair to say Tunica is in the sticks, boondocks. . . : )

Also planning for golf and day trips to Memphis and/or Clarksdale. Definitely hitting the Horseshoe!

Hey glad you had a good time, and we pretty much have the same opinions! I actually liked Harrah%26#39;s the best this last trip, and Mr. Ducky said he played at a $5 Pai Gow there but thinks the BJ was $10 (we were there on a Mon/Tues trip this time)

I am glad to see the hotel turned out to be ok for you, and I am sure your report will be helpful to others :)

The Tunica/Memphis area is always fun for us but agree that a couple days is plenty.

Horseshoe was lots of fun and we did the best there. See our trip report titled ';just back trip report';. We also liked Sam%26#39;s town and Gold Strike. We did not like Hollywood, Bally%26#39;s or Resorts at all. Have fun and good luck.

lunch spot between Memphis and Nola

Any suggestions for a lite lunch between Memphis and New Orleans? We leave the Memphis area around 9AM with hopes of arriving in New Orleans between 3-4. Any idea how long this trip takes...will be on rt.55.

    Thanks

lunch spot between Memphis and Nola

If you take I-55, the trip is about 6-6.5 hours without stops.

If you take the ';scenic route'; (US 61) it is closer to 8.

    55-stop in Jackson.

61-stop in Vicksburg. There, I would go to Walnut Hills. Slightly ';overpriced';, but a great Southern Hospitality experience, and outstanding food.

(it is in an historic home, and you are seated at a round table (about 12/per table) with Lazy Susans and good, southern comfort food.) Vicksburg is about 4 hours from Memphis. Looking at a road map, you could have the best of both ~ you can split the drive between 55 %26amp; 61, with the stretch of I-20 between Vicksburg %26amp; Jackson getting you off or back on I-55.

If you are coming on I-55, after you pass Canton (you will see the enormous Nissan Plant), there is a new shopping center. It%26#39;s called Renaissance at Colony Park, there are several good restaurants there (I think the exit says Agency Rd, not 100% certain but you can%26#39;t miss it).

A couple of miles south, still on I-55, you can take the exit for County Line Rd. There are lots of different chains there (olive garden, red Lobster, applebees).

You will see others along the interstate as you go by.

    Trip report Oct.25th-28th

I agree with other post about Tunica,if you have been to LV,it is different. We got comped the hole trip so it was a no brainer to go. We left Canton airport Sat. on a junket to Tunica with a group of people and their host. The host had no agenda for us because I booked directly with Harrahs and was told we would be staying at the Sheraton, well it ended up that we stayed at the Terrace hotel with the rest of the group. The host said there was a mistake made when we booked about the Sheraton stay. Was kinda mad but got over it when I seen the Terrace hotel,it was nice and clean with good service.

On the shuttle to the hotel my first thought was(I need a car.) Got our info from the desk clerk on how to get to the casino and I have to say the shuttles to Harrahs came every 5 min. so there was no problem with that. We really liked Harrahs casino, but I wanted to see more of the Tunica casinos. There also was a shuttle that takes you to the Horseshoe,Gold Strike and the sheraton,so we hopped on that shuttle from Harrahs. I liked the Horseshoe and even won a little bit there. Went back to Harrahs and won 500.00 on the wheel of fortune. It was about 1:00a.m. and decided to pack it in for the night. Went back to the Terrace and slept like a baby. The beds were so comfortable. I didn%26#39;t think I would like being so far from the casinos but it was nice and quiet and gave me a break from all of noise in the casino. Sunday we went back to Harrahs for the Paula Dean buffet and It was very good.Stayed and played some more and went back to horseshoe and won a little on the slots. Decided to check out the Gold Strike and wished I hadn%26#39;t,lost what I won at the Horseshoe.

Monday we rented an car and decide to check out the other casinos. I have to say I wasn%26#39;t to thrilled with most of them except for Sams Town. Didn%26#39;t gamble at any of the other casinos. We decided since we had the car we should drive to Memphis and see Beale St. It was a short drive and we ate at the Interstate. Very good ribs. Well we found Beale St. and we had a ball just going into the different stores and bars, I loved the whole history of the street. Spent the rest of the day and most of the night on Beale St. then we headed back to Tunica, had to pack for the flight home the next day.

I don%26#39;t think I would return to Tunica,it was a nice place to visit and see for the first time. I think I would like to check out Biloxi the next time.

    Trip report Oct.25th-28th

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and we also liked the same things you mentioned. I am glad to see that you made it to Beale St (lots of history there)

    Trip report Oct.25th-28th

Thank you very much Crafty. Enjoyed your report. Congratulations on your wins!

Ducky or Buick, have either one of you been to Biloxi? I am certainly interested in that area. I mostly go to Las Vegas every year but I would like to see some other casinos since I%26#39;m from Ohio and we have no casinos in this state.

I visited Biloxi several times before the hurricane and had an absolutely wonderful time. I am told it is different now that boats and hotels have been rebuilt. The casinos are closer together than in Tunica -- I%26#39;m pretty sure that hasn%26#39;t changed. I loved the Isle of Capri (which was located on the Biloxi end) because the hotel and casino were connected, great food, good wins, etc. Several of the casinos had their hotels across the street but the Grand was connected to its hotel by a covered walkway. The ones with no covered walkway were still very close.

We also enjoyed the fact that we could hop in the car and drive to the Gulfport end for another group of casinos -- although not as many and they were spread out. Again, I don%26#39;t know if this has changed. There were tons of great restaurants.

Hope this helps. Sorry I don%26#39;t have more up-to-date info.

We have been to Biloxi...stop once each summer on the way home from visiting our daughter, and just be prepared for the obvious signs of damage that still exist from Katrina. The Gulf communities are working hard to come back from such utter devastation, but it will still take time since the lack of trees alone still just makes me emotional.

You will not meet more friendly people anywhere, and I encourage people to help them out by paying a visit anywhere along that stretch of coast :)

Thank you both for your in put. Next year I think I will visit Biloxi. Again thanks.

    Casino rookies need your expertise

My wife and I have only been to a casino one time. Video poker is the game that we tend to like best. What VP machines gives you the best odds to lose your money the slowest :-) how do you find them and what casinos have them. We are only going for one night and only drop a couple hundred dollars but want to get the most fun out of it.

We have no idea what to look for in the machines or even what the different VP games are. What machines do you play and what are you looking for when playing VP?

Any ideas would be greatly appreaciated.

  • New Orleans - Memphis - Miss. Delta

My wife and I are considering a rode trip for the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. Our proposed itinerary is listed below. We welcome all suggestions and recommendations on must see / do activities and lodging. This is our first rode trip north of Louisiana.

Wed: depart New Orleans for Memphis

    Thurs: Memphis

    Fri: Memphis (Thanksgiving Day)

Sat: Miss Delta (need things to do)

    Sun: Miss Delta

Mon: depart Miss Delta to New Orleans

We have some ideas of what we want to do in Memphis. However, we would like to know the “must see” places in the Mississippi Delta (Tunica, Clarksdale, Vicksburg, and/or Yazoo City).

New Orleans - Memphis - Miss. Delta

To begin with, take a look through

    www.visitthedelta.com

It is a great site that lists the towns (along US 61) in geographical order, and lots of info for each.

';must see'; depends on your interests, of course.

I personally don%26#39;t think that Tunica is a must see, becuase i couldn%26#39;t care less about casinos, but if you want to make some time for that, there are some nice hotels in Tunica.

I would spend most of my time in the Delta between Clarksdale, Vicksburg, and maybe stop in Indianola.

www.shackupinn.com is a fun place to stay in Clarksdale.

    Vicksburg:

    visit: the Military National park.

    www.nps.gov/vick

    Historic Washington Street

Welcome Center at I-20, exit 1A, on the river.

(good visitor info, and good sunset spot)

stay: Cedar Grove Mansion, Anchuca, or the Hampton Inn.

Eat: Walnut Hills, Rusty%26#39;s, Hwy 61 coffee, and Jacques.

If you wnat to drive part of the Trace, you can do that in between Port Gibson %26amp; Natchez-very pretty.

    www.nps.gov/natr

We may very well be in the area that weekend ourselves.

    Have fun,

New Orleans - Memphis - Miss. Delta

    BigEasyTraveler,

If you pull up my previous posts, you can read my suggestions for what to see along Hwy 61 from Memphis to Vicksburg.

Although I really like Tunica, I would agree with the previous poster to skip Tunica. There are much more interesting places to spend your limited time.

Have a safe and fun trip Be sure to post a TR when you get home.

While in Memphis visit the River Park, a topographical replica of the southern MS River and river museum. Also visit Beale St and eat at Silky O%26#39;Sullivans. Ribs are great, as is the service (ask for Jesse from Iowa). Spend some time in Clarksdale. We only enjoyed the Ground Zero Blues Club (great food and entertainment) and stayed at the Shack Up Inn (Highly recommended if you are open minded in an eclectic sort of way). I also highly recommend the Briars Inn in Natchez for a great sleep and southern breakfast to die for. Ask if they still have Thursday night Social time. A great way to meet the locals. While in Natchez don%26#39;t miss the Under the Hill Saloon. We found Natchez to be the epitome of ';Southern Hospitalty';. We drove the Natchez Trace into Natchez from the North about 40 miles. That was plenty. Pretty, but slow going with fallen branches so beware.

    Sports Bars

My husband and I will be coming to Tunica Thanksgiving for a couple of nights. He is a big sports fan and I am sure he will spend some time watching football. Could anyone tell me which casino has the best sports bar to watch the games?

    Thanks,

    Springfield

    Sports Bars

A friend mentioned that she was at Harrah%26#39;s and they had a nice sports bar called Replays. She said they had good food and big screen TV%26#39;s. I plan on checking it out next time I go. Hope this helps. D.T.

    Sports Bars

Replays at Harrah%26#39;s is very nice. The hamburgers there are wonderful!

Thanks for the info on the sports bar. We will for sure check it out on Thanksgiving.

Sightseeing and place to stay in Mississippi

We%26#39;re driving from Atlanta to Shreveport later this month and were thinking of breaking our journey and staying overnight in Mississippi to do a little sightseeing then have a meal and maybe go to a blues bar/club. Wondering the best reasonably priced place to stay to receive southern hospitality and also any recommendations regarding food/entertainment.

Sightseeing and place to stay in Mississippi

If you are driving I-20, Meridian is as close to halfway as you can get. There you can find safe, clean roadside lodging and dining less than 10 years old. (Exit 157)

However, I do not know anything about entertainment or sightseeing in Meridian that is uniquely Mississippi. I have stopped there a zillion times, but that is all I have ever done in Meridian.

If you are willing to drive further the first day, you can stop in Jackson ( about 90 miles more) or Vicksburg (about 40 miles past Jackson).

In downtown Jackson is a great place called 930 Blues Cafe ( www.jesdablues.com ). GOOD food, good music.

Vicksburg, on the eastern shore of the MS River, has A LOT of history and scenery. Walnut Hills, Rusty%26#39;s Jacques, all good places to eat.

As for the true feel of MS blues Music, most of that is off your route up in the Delta, between Vicksburg and Memphis.

Search this forum for recent threads on places to stay, visit and hear Blues Music. There has been a lot of questions along that line lately.

I was just looking at this and I typed the wrong exit number. That ';more desireable exit'; in Meridian is exit 154, NOT 157.

Road trip, Elizabeth, Tunica, NOLA, Biloxi, FL

THE ROAD TRIP. I want to thank everyone who helped with suggestions, we had a GREAT time well mostly, this is really long but I broke it into parts so you can skip some of it if you find it boring.

ELIZABETH IN: Horseshoe casino. Hotel was very nice (except the iron that stained my friend’s new outfit). Great beds

Casino hot and smoky. The cliental a bit to be desired. Our first sighting on the elevator was a rather large woman wearing sweats a huge rip in the back and when she turned around no bra and her breasts hung to her belly. UGH Lost big time .

Food: We tried to find a quite spot for dinner no luck but did have a good burger St Louis style. Breakfast in the hotel cafeteria/ café was good.

Picked up my friend at the Nashville Airport WHAT A MISTAKE. They had some big game going on and it was bumper to bumper traffic coming and going to the airport. And then it got worse. After we picked her up we got over taken by a pack (10 or 12) of scary tricked out cars all with tinted windows. They came flying up behind us and surrounded us flashers going and then they came to almost a dead stop on the expressway and started yelling back and forth between the cars. This continued for at least an hour. They would pull over and we would pass them and then about 15 minutes later they would zoom up again. My one friend kept saying lets call 911. We were terrified. We didn’t want to get off or pull over so we just kept on. Not a pleasant drive. We thought it might be some type of gang initiation or something.

We barely made it to Interstate BBQ before closing YUM thanks Karen TN. I would suggest this to any one, don’t let the exterior fool you. We shared ribs, turkey, pulled pork, BBQ spaghetti, slaw and beans for a mere 10 each. Liked it all except the spag.

    TUNICA: MS: Horseshoe casino

Hotel very nice great beds but beware the bathtub it was so slippery I almost fell and so did my short friends, nothing for them to grab onto and put soap on the toes YIKES

Employees very laid back I came up to the room and the maid was cleaning and she asked could I use my blood pressure machine to check her pressure. I roared you would never get asked that in the north.

Casinos Horseshoe pretty but we liked playing at the Sheraton much better the Gold Strike we lost quickly and moved on. I hit some decent Davinci Diamonds but nothing else .

My girlfriend did get tapped on the shoulder and was asked Mrs W. did you want free buffets and she also got tapped on the shoulder and asked buffet or café? Well the last day we wiped out the café $20 goes along way. We had mud pie, key lime, lemon meringue, 3 snickers, 2 juices, and just to be healthy 2 granola cereal boxes. When she asked did we want the milk for the granola we split a gut laughing. I can truthfully say that $20 has never bought so much in any other casino I have been in.

Food: Boy did we eat the buffets Horseshoe was running a special play for ? hour and get a free buffet, great fruit and the lemon poppy seed muffins were some of the best I have eaten.. They were running a special at Sheraton buffet for $4 or if you were a senior earn 20 pts and free, what a super buffet I gorged on fresh spinach and lima beans and the turkey and potatoes were great also.

Other: People were so friendly after that scare on the Road. The Color change was starting and it was beautiful.

    NEW ORLEANS, LA

Hilton Hotel: I know a lot of people complained about this hotel and I was a bit apprehensive, but we had a great room, comfy beds and very nice staff. The only thing is they were full size beds not Queen a bit odd in this day and age.

Casino: I thought this was one of the prettiest we had seen. We didn’t gamble a lot because of sight seeing but I enjoyed this and will definitely return. My friend is not much of a drinker or gambler after the Hurricane she had wine at Harrahs. She was really doing well at Deuces wild so I tried to talk her into playing 5 quarters and she didn’t want to. I put $10 in and said bet 5 at a time. She started winning she got up to $30 and said this is your money and I said yes but I will split anything over the 30. Well she got up to 60 and I said perhaps time to cash out. I was watching and after another wine she was now throwing Deuces away LOL. NO NO she said I am having fun well OK. Needless to say when she got down to 30 I cashed out. We giggled all the way back to the hotel

Food: Beignets at café DuMond, died and went to heaven good We also had a meal at Gorden Biersch ( ?) I had read good and bad well…… It was both. We sat down and said we were starved we ordered a salad and a pizza to split and my other friend ordered a corned beef. About 40 minutes later we got the salad with the other stuff. I wasn’t happy the pizza had fresh baby spinach sautéed in garlic and artichokes, roma tomatoes it was marvelous but my friend CB was cold and really nasty. The service was really bad I can’t remember the last time I left a 10% tip but I did.

Other: We had Hurricanes at Pat Obriens and walked Bourbon Street. It was sad no one around. I hope they can recover. The cab driver who picked us up was Cajun and was great we had a lot of fun . I was the only one who could understand him and even then only every 3rd word.

    Biloxi MS

Hotel Beau Rivage: This is a beautiful hotel but sad also. We wanted to find a nice place to eat in the hotel. Olives is closed permanently. The BBQ and Steak house were closed we ate in the coffee shop the food was good but I was ready for a nice dinner. Tired of those darn buffets. The breakfast buffet at the Beau was not very good. But it was free so eat it up.

Gambling: We took a cab down to Harrahs and stayed only about an hour it was small %26amp; hot we didn’t care for it at all. The Hard Rock was pretty did ok gambling and again the darn buffet special sign up for new members. Nothing special. I did good at the Beau, I finally started hitting and won a little back at video poker hit 4OAKS a few times but still waiting for the Royal. I did find Pickem poker but couldn’t do well at that.

Other: Our cabdriver was very southern and he was talking about how it took him 3 weeks because every time he went to get his permit the police would get a call for a murder or a burglary and they would shut the office (which was only open 2 days a week for 2 hours a day) and how the last time he told the dispatcher to hold to the calls . My girlfriends couldn’t make out what he was saying except murder and permit. LOL

Overall. We had a great time. We made good time 61/2 hours from Tunica to NOLA and about the same from Biloxi to Summerfield Fl. We all lost money ugh. I am sick of buffets I rarely eat then even in Vegas but oh well. I would drive it again, but I would take more time and plan more non gambling things.I had forgotten how friendly and so much slower paced the South is. I have a great friend who shared the driving and one who went along for the ride she is 80 and boy do I admire her. We took a few cabs and tipped a few bell men because of her but other than that … Man when I get to be that age if I can do ? of what she does.

Side note the reason for the trip was my other friends 60th bday . 7 women in a 2 bedroom Condo and fun was had by all. THE WRAP : 2,100 hundred miles, 10 days. Only $380 for gas and hotel. Not bad.I never thought I would say this I am gambled out We didn’t even stop at the Hard Rock Tampa on the way home.

    ';I had forgotten how friendly and so much slower paced the South is.';

That line sums up the reason we keep visiting TN, MS, LA, and FL....thanks for sharing your trip and also agree with your comments and wish the best for the communities on the Gulf as they continue to rebuild and revitalize their area!

  • Rooms at IP

How are the standard rooms at the IP? I have to have a comfortable bed. I hear beds at the Grand Biloxi are pretty comfy, are the beds at the IP comparable?

    Rooms at IP

I was there last spring, and the rooms seemed very comfortable. Pretty good bed, not much noise, and NO SMOKING smells in room or bed. All in all, it was nice.

    Rooms at IP

Visit Grand or IP every month for overnight trip. There is not a bad bed anywhere. Rooms are smoking and non-smoking. Very clean and quiet.

Have never stayed at the Grand in Biloxi, but stay at the IP frequently. Beds are all right, but have heard the Grand has the best. Definitely prefer IP%26#39;s casino and restaurants.

  • Casinos with Balconies in Biloxi and Dec. Discounts?

My wife and I had to cancel another trip so we%26#39;re thinking of going to Biloxi in the beginning of December. Does anyone know of casinos with balconies that overlook the water and any way to find discounts in December?

Casinos with Balconies in Biloxi and Dec. Discounts?

Don%26#39;t believe any of the casinos have balconies...possibily the penhouse rooms. Many of the higher level floors have ocean views. These places are not in the business for folks to enjoy the Gulf! You realize the Biloxi is still under reconstruction from Katrina. Everything is cleaned up, but there is not much left of area after a 30 foot tidal surge came thru. Casinos are operating but undergoing rebuilding...suffering slowdown right! You will enjoy Gulf Coast in Dec. Normally, bright and sunny with mild temps...can have a chilly north wind if westerly front coming thru. Come on down.

Casinos with Balconies in Biloxi and Dec. Discounts?

Isle of Capri has some balconies, quite small and not really Gulf front. Treasure Bay had some pre-Ivan, but not sure about now. They are across the street from the Gulf. IP does not but has some beautiful views of the Bay from their rooms.

If you are wanting to enjoy the Gulf, travel a little further to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, beautiful beaches and condos with balconies.

Treasure Bay is on the North side of Hwy. 90 (Beach Blvd.). I thought I saw balconies on their hotel building. It%26#39;s a nice small hotel/casino remodeled, of course, since Katrina. It isn%26#39;t on the beach side. On the beach side of 90 is Beau Rivage, Hard Rock, and Isle of Capri in Biloxi. I know that the Beau has windows facing the Gulf and the nearby islands which keep the water toward the beach from being a beautiful Gulf blue as on East in Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Pensacola on East in Fla.

99.9% of the Biloxi/Gulfport casinos are completely finished with their remodeling except for the Grand which is building an extension on the beach side of 90. However, the main building is fine and functioning.

Please, don%26#39;t think of the Miss. Coast as still destroyed. True, there are some cleared off foundations and property; but, by all means, it does not all look desolate. On our last visit recently, we only saw maybe 2 or 3 buildings still sitting untouched since being destroyed by Katrina.

Try the restaurants, Salute%26#39; and Look Out 49, in Gulfport....great food....as does Mary Mahoney%26#39;s in Biloxi. Lots of great food in the casinos also.

Hope you find a place that you will enjoy. We personally like the Beau Rivage.

    Non-casino hotels

Would like to spend Dec. 30-Jan. 2 in Biloxi. Casino hotels are, of course, charging 2-3+ times what we payed for a room this summer. Are the Hampton, Best Western or others decent? Any others that are fairly close to the casinos? Thanks for your help.

    Non-casino hotels

There are several chain places along I 10 exits 50 and 46. Only short drive to casino row along beach road. Walmart and Lowes located at exit 46. Just about every other motel along beach has not been rebuilt since storm...not much choice there. All prices will be inflated for this time frame. To make matters worse...you have much of the Sugar Bowl crowd (Jan 1) from New Orleans that inhabit the area for this weekend...normally a roudy and obnoxious bunch of merrymakers wearing their team colors. You will find no peace and quiet anywhere!

    Non-casino hotels

This past week, I thought I saw a Marriott either in Biloxi or Gulfport on Beach Blvd. (Hwy. 90). It looked nice enough.

    First time visitor

Hi, visiting for the first time in February. Spending a couple days in Biloxi, then on to New Orleans. Is there any bus service from Biloxi to New Orleans? Probably will need to rent a car but understand parking is at a premium in NO. We are used to Las Vegas and wondering what kind of drink prices are in the casinos....I hear they are not free while gambling like LV. Any suggestions appreciated.

    First time visitor

No sure about bus service, but if there is a Greyhound stop in Biloxi, they probably go to New Orleans. Saw two buses on I-10 heading West today marked Houston, so I would think they stop in New Orleans.

Drinks are ';free'; while gambling at all casinos in Biloxi and Gulfport. Tipping accepted, of course.

    First time visitor

Renting a car will be your best bet for getting around Biloxi and getting to NOLA. There used to be a shuttle service but I think that has stopped since Katrina.

If you are used to Vegas, then you will be be glad to know that everything is cheaper in Biloxi than it is in LV, including the table minimums. :)

But drinks are still ';free'; for gamblers, just like LV.

Thanks for the info...I have rented a car....can%26#39;t wait!!

I have the very same ? and would appreciate an answer about travel between Biloxi and New Orleans. Kindly let me know.....

    Trip report Nov 13 -15th

We left Charlotte on a Harrahs junket and landed in the large Tunica airport :). Had a two night comped room at Harrahs grand tower. The grand is right beside the casino and very very short walk. Very impressed with Harrahs casino, lots of table games and blackjack had many $10 tables. Early in the morning I even saw some $5 tables. Started off at the craps table and it was hot. Lots of fun with the whole table winning. It is always fun to play craps when the shooters are hot. Decided to grab some dinner at Paula Dean%26#39;s and it was awesome. Best home cooking buffet I have ever tasted. After dinner took the shuttle over the Horseshoe. It was much more crowded and walked up to the craps table again. Turned around and saw Joe Theisman playing blackjack at the $100 table. He busted out and came over and threw the dice with us for a while. Nobody really bothered him but he was nice and cordial. Not much luck at Horseshoe so we headed over to Sheraton. THis place was dead. It was aroun 9:00pm on THursday nightbut not much action going on at the tables. Played for a little but had to catch shuttle back to Harrahs. The shuttle stops running at 11:00pm on the weeknights. :((

Friday woke up to much of the same. Played more craps at Harrahs then headed back over to Sheraton (still dead) and played some blackjack. Had a great time with a local from Memphis who said she was a professional blackjack player??? Didn%26#39;t look much like one.

Only played these three casinos since we were on a Harrahs junket and they prefer you only play at Harrahs.

Really enjoyed Harrahs casino has a real vegas feel. Drink service was real good and there were two lady%26#39;s who were drop dead gorgeous. The rest of the wait staff would make you turn the other way. Horseshoe was a little crowded and seemed like a fan favorite for the locals. Really enjoyed Sheraton since it was real dead and the drink service was unstoppable. She refilled your drink when you were only half way done.

The Grand Tower is a lot closer than it looks online. I would prefer this tower over the Terrace which is a short shuttle ride across the street.

The shuttles only run every 30 minutes and they are crowded so sometimes you are not allowed to get on which really sucks because you have to wait another 30 minutes.

Tunica airport is the smallest airport I have ever seen. About a 20 minutes bus ride to the casinos.

Harrahs only has 2 restaurants open during the day. REplays which is a sports bar and has a wide variety of burgers and sandwhiches. Then there is the great Paula DEan buffet which offers everything you can imagine.

All in all we had a great trip and cannot wait to return.

    Trip report Nov 13 -15th

Great report. Thank you very much for posting. I%26#39;m on a 2 week countdown to Tunica. It%26#39;s a great filler between Vegas trips!

  • Petal Question/Possible relocation

I%26#39;ve just returned from evacation and made the decision that hurricane evacations are something my health just can%26#39;t take anymore. I read statistics about Petal on e-podunk it seemed to have low crime and. affordable housing, I was wondering about FLOODING, are the streets prone to flash flooding , does the area have a history of riverine flooding, I flooded in Katrina and rebulit but the prospect of doing again is more than I can take. I%26#39;m trying to stay as close to my son as possible who is student at LSU . ( The Baton Rouge has some flood issues..plus housing is not as economical). A Sturdy age restricted retirement community does anyone know of anything remotely similar to this?

    Petal Question/Possible relocation

Petal, is a very good area to live. There are a few areas that are prone to flash flooding. But few and far between. They are mainly surrounding the river or some of the creeks in the area. There is very low crime, very nice community to live and Hattiesburg offers a lot with a short drive as well )

    Bar Hours ?

I%26#39;ll be making my first Biloxi trip this weekend. I see on other posts that liquor isn%26#39;t available on Sundays. Traveling with the guys, and having a late arrival (11pm Sun. 7th), I was wondering what the liquor laws in MS are. Can you get drinks in the casinos on Sun? How late do the casino bars stay open? How late can you get a drink at the tables? I%26#39;m staying at Beau Rivage, just curious, any answers would be appreciated. Thanks

    Bar Hours ?

You can have a mixed drink around the clock at all the casinos on the Miss. Coast.....

We have visited our Miss. Coast many times and stayed at the Beau at least 10 times; but have never really been up until the wee hours of the morning or all night long in the casino yet. However, I know for a fact that you can drink around the clock there in the casinos.

    Bar Hours ?

.....forgot to mention: You can drink on Sundays also in the casinos.

We have been out to 6am drinking at the casinos round the clock 7 days a week just like in Vegas.

Specific night clubs may have specific hours but they are usually open till 3 or 4 am.

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to the trip

    Margaritaville Casino

I heard from some people in Biloxi, that the new casino is being delayed, and reduced. Has anybody heard anything about the trouble its having?

    Margaritaville Casino

The national economic slow down and credit crunch has apparently taken its toll on this project. I visited last week, and everything was at a standstill. Believe that Harrah%26#39;s have downsized somewhat, but nothing is evident. Still appears that this will be a great project still scheduled to open in 2010.

    Margaritaville Casino

A dealer at The Beau told me they pulled the plug on it. When we drove by there was no equipment there at all. The cranes are there, but probably because the cost to remove them, and maybe there are no other big jobs to move them to.

Ohhhh that%26#39;s so disappointing on so many levels. :(

Holts Biloxi%26#39;s growth...meaning less visitors and less revenue for the city. Loss of work for construction workers and all the other folks needed to build the casino.

Do you think the extreme makeover home edition would take on this as a special project to help the city with a little help from the Jimmy Buffet fund?

Honeymoon Getaway at the Beau Rivage

My fiance (and husband to be!) and I are going to spend a few days at the Beau Rivage for a honeymoon getaway. We can get a great deal on a room, and are now really excited about staying there! I haven%26#39;t been back to the coast since Katrina (originally from MS), so it will be nice to go back.

Wanted to get your feedback on the selection of the BR for a honeymoon getaway (looked into the Hard Rock, but it was considerably more $$....wanting to do a small-scale getaway for directly after the wedding because we%26#39;re taking the ';actual'; honeymoon later in the year...and wanted to do so on a little bit of a budget). Room at the BR: King room with an oceanview. Sound okay? Are these rooms nice?

Also, wanted to get a bit of feedback on restaurants, etc. I am a closet buffet-lover, so yes, we%26#39;ll be hitting up the buffet at the BR. But what about their other restaurants? We thought we%26#39;d do one dinner at a ';nice'; restaurant. I looked into the fine dining options at the BR, but have no idea about the price ranges (they give the menu, but no pricing).

Other suggestions? We%26#39;re from NOLA, and eat seafood regularly, so eating at a seafood restaurant isn%26#39;t necessarily a priority, but if there%26#39;s a good one, then I would definitely be open to any suggestions.

The proximity of BR to other places? It%26#39;s near the Hard Rock, right? Are there good restaurants in the Hard Rock?

I appreciate any and all feedback!! Also open to fun things to do during the day! We%26#39;re just starting to put together our plans, so bring on the ideas!!

    Thanks in advance!

Honeymoon Getaway at the Beau Rivage

I%26#39;ve stayed at the BR twice this year and really like it. The rooms with an ocean view are really nice at the Beau. They have a very good buffet, coffee shop and sports bar and grill which are nice. The steak house is very expensive so be prepared. The steaks start at about 35 and go up. Ruth Chris steak house is in the Hard rock casino right next door. its a 5 minute walk to the Hard rock. The casino%26#39;s sit side by side. There is a shuttle that will take you from one casino to another for a small fee.

Ask for a room at the end of the hall on 9 or above. These rooms are a little larger and have windows on two side, They do NOT have to be gulfview to see the beach. In fact on the roadside you look up and down hwy 90 and the beach to the west. To the east you see the Hardrock. More importantly if you do not like the room simply call the front desk from that room and see what else they have. The staff wants to please you and will work with you. There are some really bad rooms that look at walls on 5 so get what you want!!

Re reataurants. We ate at Mary Mahoney%26#39;s across the road at our last stay and this was a huge disappointment compared to past visits. I believe the Hardrock has a Ruth%26#39;s Chris- pricey but excellent reputation.

I advise going by the BR and Hardrock restaurants and ask to see the menu.

All of the restaurants at BR have the menus posted. I don%26#39;t think it would be hard to make a reservation while you are there. I love the Beau - am staying there in a couple of days. We wanted to stay for 3 nights, but the weekend rate was just too high. I did find reasonable rates for Hard Rock on Travelocity. So we are moving during our stay. I really like the rooms at HR too - both great hotels. HR %26amp; Beau are probably a 3 minute walk from each other with a sidewalk. Other hotels are driving or shuttling distance. Remember to get players cards at both places. They might comp a meal or buffet if you gsmble a bit.
