New Orleans - Memphis - Miss. Delta

My wife and I are considering a rode trip for the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. Our proposed itinerary is listed below. We welcome all suggestions and recommendations on must see / do activities and lodging. This is our first rode trip north of Louisiana.

Wed: depart New Orleans for Memphis

Thurs: Memphis

Fri: Memphis (Thanksgiving Day)

Sat: Miss Delta (need things to do)

Sun: Miss Delta

Mon: depart Miss Delta to New Orleans

We have some ideas of what we want to do in Memphis. However, we would like to know the “must see” places in the Mississippi Delta (Tunica, Clarksdale, Vicksburg, and/or Yazoo City).

To begin with, take a look through

www.visitthedelta.com

It is a great site that lists the towns (along US 61) in geographical order, and lots of info for each.

';must see'; depends on your interests, of course.

I personally don%26#39;t think that Tunica is a must see, becuase i couldn%26#39;t care less about casinos, but if you want to make some time for that, there are some nice hotels in Tunica.

I would spend most of my time in the Delta between Clarksdale, Vicksburg, and maybe stop in Indianola.

www.shackupinn.com is a fun place to stay in Clarksdale.

Vicksburg:

visit: the Military National park.

Historic Washington Street

Welcome Center at I-20, exit 1A, on the river.

(good visitor info, and good sunset spot)

stay: Cedar Grove Mansion, Anchuca, or the Hampton Inn.

Eat: Walnut Hills, Rusty%26#39;s, Hwy 61 coffee, and Jacques.

If you wnat to drive part of the Trace, you can do that in between Port Gibson %26amp; Natchez-very pretty.

We may very well be in the area that weekend ourselves.

Have fun,

Miller

BigEasyTraveler,

If you pull up my previous posts, you can read my suggestions for what to see along Hwy 61 from Memphis to Vicksburg.

Although I really like Tunica, I would agree with the previous poster to skip Tunica. There are much more interesting places to spend your limited time.

Have a safe and fun trip Be sure to post a TR when you get home.

While in Memphis visit the River Park, a topographical replica of the southern MS River and river museum. Also visit Beale St and eat at Silky O%26#39;Sullivans. Ribs are great, as is the service (ask for Jesse from Iowa). Spend some time in Clarksdale. We only enjoyed the Ground Zero Blues Club (great food and entertainment) and stayed at the Shack Up Inn (Highly recommended if you are open minded in an eclectic sort of way). I also highly recommend the Briars Inn in Natchez for a great sleep and southern breakfast to die for. Ask if they still have Thursday night Social time. A great way to meet the locals. While in Natchez don%26#39;t miss the Under the Hill Saloon. We found Natchez to be the epitome of ';Southern Hospitalty';. We drove the Natchez Trace into Natchez from the North about 40 miles. That was plenty. Pretty, but slow going with fallen branches so beware.
